Gary Payton II is not only an exceptional basketball player but also one who has received several awards and honors. As a college student who played for the Oregon State Beavers, he was named All-Pac-12, Pac-12 All-Defensive Team, Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, to name a few. He began his NBA career in 2016 at the Houston Rockets as an unenrolled agent and also played for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers before signing a training camp contract with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2018.

Who Is Gary Payton II? Bio

Gary was born on December 1, 1992, in Seattle, Washington, as the son of Monique and Gary Payton under the birth name Gary Dwayne Payton II. He attended Spring Valley High School, where he played basketball and was a member of the swimming team. After graduating in 2011, he spent a teaching period at the Westwind Preparatory Academy.

He later played basketball for two seasons at Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a freshman, he led the team to the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) where they won the SWAC title. In his first season with the team, he has also named the first all-SWAC team and was included in the list of the 18 all-tournament teams in the region. In his second year, Gary Payton II was named the second team in the NJCAA Division I All-American after averaging 7.9 rebounds, 14.1 points, 1.9 steals, and 3.8 assists per game. In the same year, he won the Region 18 Co-Player of the Year award and was also named the 18 most valuable players of the year. With him on the team, the Bruins won the Region 18 Championship for the second year running.

Gary Payton II continued to play college basketball at Oregon State University (the same college his father attended). During his time with the Oregon State Beavers, he was named All-Pac-12, Pac-12 All-Defensive Team, Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year.

In 2016 he was one of the ten-point guards of the year on the Bob Cousy Award list. His name also appeared on the 35-man watch list for the mid-season Naismith Player of the Year.

Gary Payton II NBA Career

No team chose him for the 2016 NBA Draft, after which he joined the Houston Rockets for the summer league. The Rockets signed him later in September and gave him up the next month (October) after he played in six of their games. That same month, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA Development League acquired him. In a December game against the Los Angeles D-Fenders, Payton scored fifty-one points in a 20-29 shootout with eleven rebounds.

His tenure with the Vipers ended on April 1, 2017, and the next day he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks and made his first appearance for the team the same evening in a game against the Dallas Mavericks, where he scored 5 points in 9 minutes. On October, October 14th to be exact, he was relinquished, and on October 17th the Bucks received a 2-way deal for him through their G-League daughter Wisconsin Herd. The deal meant that Payton II would return to the Bucks at the beginning of next season.

Gary Payton II’s first NBA game took place in November 2017, in a match against the Phoenix Suns. He played as a starting center forward, but unfortunately, he had to leave the game early due to an injury. In January 2018 he joined the Los Angeles Lakers under another two-way contract, and for the rest of the 2018 season, he played for both the Lakers and their G League daughter team – the South Bay Lakers.

In his last game of the season against the Los Angeles Clippers, Gary not only scored a career highlight of twenty-five points but also a career highlight of twelve points. In September 2018 he signed a training camp contract with the Portland Trail Blazers.

His Family, Parents

As already mentioned, Gary is the son of Monique James and Gary Payton. His father, Gary Payton Sr., is a retired NBA player who played as a point guard for several NBA teams including the Milwaukee Bucks, the Los Angeles Lakers (the same teams his son played for), Miami Heat, Seattle SuperSonics, and the Boston Celtics. He was on the Seattle team for thirteen full seasons, breaking the team’s records for assists, points, and stealing.

Payton II’s parents married in 1997, about five years after his birth, but the couple later divorced. Gary Payton II is the first of three children Monique and Gary Sr. had together. His two younger siblings are Julia and Raquel. He also has a half-brother named Gary Payton Jr.
