Cesaro alias Claudio Castagnoli is a Swiss-born professional wrestler who joined the WWE in September 2011. He is an accomplished wrestler, especially in tag team competitions both on the independent circuit and at the WWE.

In addition to numerous independent titles, Cesaro has won the WWE U.S. Championship and the first-ever André the Giant Memorial Trophy. Along with former tag team partner Chris Hero, Cesaro currently holds the record for the longest term (364 days) as Ring of Honor (ROH) World Tag Team Champion. In January 2018 he won the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship for the fifth consecutive year.

WWE superstar Cesaro was born on December 27, 1980, in Lucerne, Switzerland, as Claudio Castagnoli. He trained in his home country before moving to Germany to start his professional wrestling career under the Westside Xtreme Wrestling (wXw) promotion. In his early years as a professional wrestler, Castagnoli established himself as a very successful tag team wrestler. Initially, he founded the tag team “Swiss Money Holding” together with his compatriot Ares, which later performed in several European countries and the United States.

In 2004 Claudio Castagnoli moved completely to the USA to continue his professional wrestling career. Under his real name, Castagnoli competed in Ring of Honor (ROH) Wrestling Entertainment, Combat Zone Wrestling, and the Chikara Pro Wrestling Promotion. At the end of 2004, he joined forces with Chris Hero to form the tag team “The Kings of Wrestling” and they won the CZW World Tag Team Championship. He also won the Tag World Grand Prix 2005, where he formed the Tag Team AC/CC together with Arik Cannon. Cesaro’s “Kings of Wrestling” also won the ROH World Tag Team Championship in September 2006 and the Chikara Tag Team Championship 2006.

After winning the first Chikara Tag Team Championship in 2006, Castagnoli won the tag team title for the second time in March 2010 with his longtime partner Ares. Together with Ares and Tursas he also won the 2010 King of Trios tournament and in April 2010 Castagnoli reunited with his King of Wrestling partner Chris Hero to win the ROH World Tag Team Championship for the second time. On October 9, 2010, he won the PWG World Championship, his first single title in the United States.

Claudio Castagnoli’s time at WWE began in September 2011 when he signed a development contract with the company. After taking the stage name “Antonio Cesaro”, he made his TV debut under WWE SmackDown on April 20, 2012. In August 2012 the wrestler won the WWE United States Championship title at the SummerSlam (2012) Pre-Show. His 239-day reign as WWE United States Champion ended on April 15th after a defeat to Kofi Kingston.

In 2014 (April) Cesaro defeated the Big Show at Wrestlemania XXX, winning the first André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal. The following year, in February, he won his first WWE Tag Team Championship title alongside Tyson Kidd. In December 2016, Cesaro had a second reign as WWE Tag Team Champion when he teamed up with Sheamus to win the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship at Roadblock: End of the line event. After losing the title in January 2017, he and Sheamus won it back in June 2017 after losing to Hardy Boyz in the Extreme Rules event. In the Royal Rumble (2018), the duo won the title for the fourth year in a row, and due to their successful careers as tag-team partners, Cesaro and Sheamus were transformed into the WWE SmackDown brand during the 2018 WWE Superstar Shake-up.

He developed a strong interest in wrestling at a young age, and since his late teenage years, he started training and competing as a professional wrestler in Switzerland and Germany. On September 24, 2017, Cesaro suffered a gruesome injury while competing with his tag-team partner Sheamus at the No Mercy (2017) event, which resulted in two of his front teeth being pushed further into the gums. The injury became apparent as blood began to gush from the wound. Nevertheless, the Swiss Superman was able to finish the game. Cesaro and his partner eventually lost the game, whereupon his mouth injury was sutured and emergency dental surgery was performed.
