She was born on June 9, 1966, in Fort Worth, Texas, into a large family of 14 children, of which she is the youngest. Mann was raised intensively according to the principles of Christianity together with her siblings, who all grew up with their mother, a convinced Christian. She was a member of her church choir, where she began to show a forte in music by singing solos and leading the church choir during the service. Tamela had the choir as her second home throughout her school years before her paths crossed with the Grammy-winning gospel group Kirk Franklin and the Family.

She started singing with the group in the 90s. Her experiences with them brought her into the limelight, and soon she was discovered by the film actors. Tamela’s employment with the Kirk Franklin group led to her acting career and also to her solo music career.

She left the gospel group and starred in He Say…She Says…But What Does God Say? by David E. Talbert. Her first stage play was I Can Do Bad All By Myself in 1999 when she was discovered by Tyler Perry. Further productions by Tyler Perry followed, including “Meet The Browns”, “Madeas Class Reunion”, “Madea’s Family Reunion” and many others. Apart from her film appearances, Mann has also had appearances on television. She appeared on the “Tonight Show”, the “BET Soundstage”, the 1999 Grammy Awards, “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne” and many other television shows.

Tamela Mann began her solo career in 2005 when she and her husband founded the label Tillyman Music Group. In the same year, she released her solo album “Gotta Keep Movin”. Three years later she released her third studio album “Best Days”, which did so much better than the first two.
