Steven Spielberg made his first film when he was 12 years old. It was about a train accident in which his then toy, the Lionel trains, played a role. During his teenage years, he continued to make amateur films until he became a Boy Scout in 1958 and won the badge for photographers after shooting a nine-minute 8mm film called The Last Shot.
Years later, he spoke to an interviewer about this experience. He said:
“My father’s still camera was broken, so I asked the scoutmaster if I could tell a story about my father’s film camera. He said yes, and I had the idea to make a western. I made it and got my merit badge. That’s how it all started.”
At the age of sixteen, in 1963, Steven Spielberg wrote and directed Firelight – a 140-minute science-fiction adventure – which became his very first independent film, and which later inspired the film Close Encounters. The budget for the film was $500, most of which came from his father, and the film ran one night in a local movie theater, recouping production costs that same night.
