Payton entered the world on December 29, 19.63 in San Mateo, California, and was born of his parents Thomas and Jeanne Payton. He attended Naperville Central High School and took an active part in elite sports by playing soccer as a quarterback. He received a scholarship invitation to Eastern Illinois University to play college football.
After college, Payton was not drafted by the NFL in the 1987 draft, so he played as an unconscripted rookie for the Kansas City Chiefs on a one-day trial in 1987. Soon after, he started his career as a quarterback with the Chicago Bears before moving to Canada and playing in the Canadian football league for the Ottawa Rough Riders. He also played for the Leicester Panthers of the British Budweiser National League.

Sean Payton began his coaching career in 1988 as an offensive assistant at the University of San Diego. After working at the university, he held other smaller positions as a college coach for other teams. In 1997, he was promoted to quarterback coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. The following year, he lost this position and became the quarterback coach for the New York Giants in 1999. In 2006 he was hired by the New Orleans Saints as head coach.
