Rick Ross may no longer be the shining newcomer, but he definitely has a lot more to offer. In his heyday, he was the name on the lips of every rap fan around the world.
Ross has been in the game a long time – since 2000. The founder of the Maybach Music Group has published numerous projects and received enough awards to make any aspiring presenter jealous, disappoint him or encourage him to succeed.
Bio, Wiki, Age
Ross, whose real name is William Leonard Roberts II, is a boy from Mississipi. He was born in Clarksdale on January 28, 1976. However, his family moved to Carol City, Florida, where he grew up. Ross’s high school education was at Miami Carol City Senior High School. At that time he was athletic and played football for his school. This earned him a soccer scholarship to Albany State University, a historically black university.
His post-graduation days began when he worked in the capacity of a correctional officer. This position lasted from December 1995 until his retirement in June 1997.
Music was the next step for William, and it began under Suave House Records. At that time his stage name was Tefla Da Don, and he lent his skills in Eric Sermon’s Def Squad Presents Erick Onasis song “Ain’t Shhh to Discuss”.
In the mid-2000s, he changed his pseudonym and was inspired by the name of former drug baron “Freeway” Rick Ross. He has no connection to the drug lord.
He soon moved on and signed with Slip-n-Slide, a daughter label of Def Jam Records since 2006, where he continued his career with features and tours, especially with his label mate Trick Daddy
He then released his debut album under Slip-n-Slide. It was entitled Port of Miami and debuted on the Billboard 200 at number 1, selling 187,000 units in the first week. His second single Push It was the title song for the gangster movie Scarface. In the same year, he also made two features on DJ Khaled’s debut album Listennn…the album. Port of Miami was also awarded gold by the RIAA on November 8, 2006.
In March 2008, his second studio album Trilla was released, which also debuted at the top of the Billboard 200. The album features stars such as R.Kelly and T-Pain, Nelly, and Trey Songz. The first two single features earned him a place at number 21 and 17 of the U.S. Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 singles and the Hot 100 respectively.
In a year when he also signed a management contract with P.Diddy’s Ciroc Entertainment, he would release his next album entitled Deeper Than Rap. In the single “Valley of Death,” he dealt with questions about his time as a prison officer.
Since 2010 he has released numerous projects and worked with top acts like JayZ, Meek Mill, and Jeezy. Between 2012 and 2017 he received numerous Grammy nominations. His 2013 God Forgives, I Don’t album was nominated for Best Rap Album, while his single Purple Lamborghini was nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
