Contrary to what most people thought about Preston Roberts, his life does not revolve around the Mountain Men show. He apparently had a fulfilling career and served as an educator in the Wilkes County school system for 25 years. During his time in this system, Roberts was recognized for his dedication to service and twice received the title of Teacher of the Year.

He also served as an instructor at some of the primitive skill gatherings and cultural events scattered throughout the United States. This was his way of giving something back to society after being taught by some of the best the country has to offer.

Although the traditional people of the Appalachian Mountains are the ones with whom he was most connected, Roberts went out of his way to mingle with the Native Americans, from whom he learned much. He later became a singer and contemporary traditional dancer. Before his death, he worked at the Turtle Island Preserve, which he built up with Eustace. He was a member of the board and in his spare time, he made knives and went hunting and fishing.

Preston Roberts became a television personality when he was cast for the reality TV show Mountain Men on the History Channel. The show, which premiered on May 31, 2012, reports on the daily activities of a select few who have chosen to live their lives without the comforts of modern facilities. Robert’s death did not stop the camera from continuing to shoot, as the show is still running on the History Channel. Mountain Men currently shows men who have spent decades in the mountains and cannot imagine leaving all this serene nature to the hectic activity of the cities. Eustace Conway in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Tom Oar on the Yaak River in Montana, and Marty Meierotto in Alaska are the main actors of the show.
