The actor was born on October 24, 1947, in St. Louis, Missouri, as Kevin Delaney Kline. Kline is of both German and Irish descent and was raised by his father, Robert Joseph Kline, who was an amateur opera singer, a record shop owner – The Record Bar – and a mother he described as very dramatic.
With two younger brothers and an older sister, he grew up in the Catholic faith and attended Saint Louis Priory School in 1965. Since his school days, he started acting and appeared in many plays. Nevertheless, at this time he was more interested in music. For this reason, he decided to study composition and conducting at Indiana University in Bloomington.
Two years after his college studies, his acting side became stronger than music, and so he turned to theater and language, which he continued until he graduated in 1970. Before graduating, he co-founded an off-campus theater group, the Vest Pocket Players.
From there he moved to the Juilliard School in New York, where he attended the newly formed Drama Division. There he became part of the City Center Acting Company (The Acting Company), which traveled around and performed Shakespeare’s plays, among others.

After leaving the company, he received his first acting role in the soap opera “Search for Tomorrow” in 1986 and then in the same year “The Time of Your Life”.
