Bill was determined to earn a bachelor’s degree and set sail to become a teacher during his studies, but fate had a different plan for him. When he left college, he worked in various jobs, including as a tour guide in the Inner Space Caverns and as a disc jockey in a nightclub in Dallas, Texas. His entry into stand-up comedy was the result of his work as a DJ. He performed at amateur and open mic nights in Dallas, and it wasn’t long before he discovered that comedy was actually his strength. In 1990 he moved to Southern California to devote himself entirely to comedy, and later to Los Angeles to venture into acting.

Within a very short time, he became known for his performances in a number of successful shows and series. He hosted the cable show A pair of Jokers together with comedian Rosie O’Donnell and was cast as Matthew Devereaux, son of Blanche Devereaux, in an episode of the sitcom The Golden Girls. Bill also hosted An Evening at The Improv of the A&E Network and stand-up routines on the Tonight Show and the Late Show with David Letterman.

The breakthrough in his career came in 1992 when he won the American Comedy Awards for best male stand-up. Bill Engvall played regularly for a season in the ABC sitcom Delta. In 1996 he was cast in the NBC version of The Jeff Foxworthy Show with his best friend and comic colleague Jeff Foxworthy.

Since the beginning of his career, he has released ten studio comedy albums and was signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1996. His albums include Here’s Your Sign, which went platinum and climbed to number 5 on the Billboard Country Album charts, Dorkfish, Here’s Your Christmas Album, Now That’s Awesome, Cheap Drunk: An Autobiography, Here’s Your Sign Reloaded, A Decade of Laughs, 15° Off Cool, Aged and Confused.

In addition to his comedic resume, Bill Engvall started the highly successful Blue Collar Comedy Tour with Jeff Foxworthy in 2000. The comedy ensemble also includes Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White. In June 2011, he received an appearance as a presenter on the game show Lingo, which marks a new beginning in his career.

Bill competed with Emma Slater in the 17th season of ABC Dancing with the Stars and finished fourth. He also appeared on the TBS sitcom The Bill Engvall Show alongside Jennifer Lawrence, who began her award-winning career after the unveiling. He also produced the show, lent his voice to the animated series Bounty Hunters, and starred in many solo specials for Comedy Central.

He has also published a number of books as an author, including Just a Guy: Notes from a Blue Collar Life (2007), which he co-wrote with Alan Eisenstock.
