Apart from the mother team, where he did not play, he was traded in on the draft night, playing for seven other teams and for a total of 11 NBA seasons. Other teams include the Los Angeles Lakers, the Washington Wizards as the point guard, and Orlando Magic in the 2003-2004 season, after which he was transferred to the Houston Rockets. Next on the list were the Atlanta Hawks, where he was substituted in the middle of the season, and the Sacramento Kings, Dallas Mavericks, Milwaukee Bucks, and finally he was rejoined by Orlando Magic in 2009.

Coaching Career

As he has played for various teams during his basketball career, he seemed more than qualified to take on the position of the coach when he was presented with the coat. He had the advantage of sitting, training, and playing under different coaches and must have been familiar with what it takes to successfully lead an NBA team. As expected, Tyronn Lue more than lives up to his mission.

His career as a player ended in 2009, and in October of the same year, he became Director of Basketball Development for the Boston Celtics. Four years later, in July 2013, he became part of the coaching staff of the Los Angeles Clippers. Tyronn made steady progress in his coaching career and was hired by the Cleveland Cavaliers on June 23, 2014, as assistant head coach. His new appointment made him one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in the NBA, with a salary of $6.5 million over a four-year period.

When the search for the Cavaliers’ head coach came up, Tyronn was a prime candidate for the position. In the end, however, the position went to David Blatt. In the middle of the 2015-2015 season, coach David was dismissed, leaving the position open for Tyronn Lue, as he could wear the cap. The three-year coaching contract came into force on 22 January 2016.

The head coach of the Cavs has already achieved a lot in his job in his first season. On 19 May his team defeated the Toronto Raptors in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals. After the unbeaten record in the 2016 play-off round, Tyronn was the first coach in the history of the NBA to win his first 10 post-season games. With further victories, they won their first NBA championship on June 19, 2016, becoming one of the few young coaches in NBA history to ever lead his team to a title after a 52-year championship drought. Impressive, isn’t it?

Tyronn Lue relies on flexibility and James’ consistency as a coaching style. Although the style has been described in the regular season as undisciplined and unprepared, the end has always justified the means. Despite the apparently poor style, he has been praised for his ability to think several moves ahead and create a match advantage.

After less than three years in his career, and even more so as a youth coach, he was rewarded with well-deserved awards and honors. At the 2016 ESPY Awards, he was named Best Trainer/Manager, and his team was named Best Team. In addition, part of Walnut Street in his hometown has been renamed Tyronn Lue Boulevard.
