She was born on January 2, 1967, in Honolulu, Hawaii, as Althea Rae Janairo. She was raised by her parents; Audrey Duhinio Janairo her mother and Alexander Janairo her father. As a child, Tia wanted to become a singer and began her time at the Girls-only Sacred Hearts Academy to show this interest. This passion drove her to participate in the Star Search talent show in 1985. She never made it to the final stage, however. But Carrere later caught the attention of a local producer and got a role in the movie Aloha Summer, from where she started her way to celebrity status.
Tia worked as a model for several months before she got another role in the TV series Airwolf in 1985. The singer and actress got her first leading role in the popular soap opera General Hospital as Jade Soong. She then appeared in the MacGyver series as a karate teacher.
