Hamilton was born Normani Kordei Hamilton in Atlanta, Georgia on May 31, 1996, the son of parents Derrick and Andrea Hamilton, who raised her in New Orleans. As a child, Kordei was very active and participated in gymnastics and beauty contests. As a teenager, Hamilton expanded her interest in music. She recorded her first song at the age of 13 and appeared in a small role in the HBO series Treme.
In 2011 she played the role of Bryn in the short film Book. In search of a music career, Hamilton auditioned for the second season of X-Factor in 2012. She received a yes from all 4 judges after singing Aretha Franklin’s hit song “Chain of Fools”.
Hamilton’s stay in the competition didn’t last as long as she would have liked because she was eliminated in the second round of the boot camp. But good fortune smiled on her when she was called back, this time not as a solo artist but together with her fellow contestants Ally Brooke, Dinah Jane Hansen, Camila Cabello, and Lauren Jauregui to form a girls’ group called Fifth Harmony.
With Fifth Harmony, Hamilton made it to the final round of the competition in third place. After the competition, the group released their first EP Better Together, followed by their debut album Reflection (2015). 7/27 was released in 2016. Camila Cabello left the group sometime in 2017, but the group continued as a quartet of the same name and released their self-titled album in 2017.
Besides working with Fifth Harmony, Hamilton has worked on solo projects. On 21 October 2017, it was reported that Normani had signed with the management company and record label S10 Entertainment.

Normani’s romantic life has been a topic of great interest to the media since her time at the X Factor house when she was with her fellow candidate Arin Ray. The two had met during boot camp. Viewers of this season’s show remembered that they flirted with each other constantly.
Ray did not even hide his affection for Hamilton when he openly dedicated some of his appearances to her. Unfortunately, her romance seemed to have gotten in the way of business when Ray became distracted, culminating in his leaving the show. Although Ray’s departure did not automatically mean that he was no longer with Hamilton, their relationship did not survive long after the show ended. They reportedly broke up in 2013.
Normani then rumored that she was dating her colleague Fifth Harmony Dinah Jane Hansen’s cousin, Thomas Hansen. However, the rumors were never confirmed. Since then Normani has been associated with a number of guys, including her Dancing with the Stars partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy. The chemistry between the two on stage was simply wonderful and the audience couldn’t help but speculate that there must have been more about them.
Normani, who was always so emotional, was also associated with the How to Get Away with Murder actor Kendrick Sampson. The rumors that it was a thing started to spread after they were spotted flirting with each other at Variety’s “Power of Young Hollywood” party in LA in early August 2017.
