Matt was born on October 8, 1970, in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Kent Damon, a stockbroker, real estate agent, and accountant, and Nancy Carlsson-Paige, a professor of early childhood education at Lesley University, and was one of the lucky children who grew up in a stable community and grew up around actor Ben Affleck.

His parents divorced when he was just two years old and Matt and his brother returned with their mother from Newton (where they had moved to) to Cambridge where they lived in a six-family community house.

He attended Cambridge Alternative School (now Graham and Parks) and continued his education at Cambridge Rindge and at the Latin School. During high school, Matt appeared as an actor in several school theatre productions, although Ben Affleck, his good friend, and schoolmate, was getting the “biggest roles and longest speeches” at that time.

Matt acknowledges acting teacher Gerry Speca as an important artistic influence in his life. After high school, he attended Harvard University, where he was a member of the class in 1992. Because of a role in the film Geronimo: An American Legend, which he left before graduating.

While at Harvard, he wrote an early adaptation of the script for Good Will Hunting as an exercise for an English class. He later received awards, including an Oscar for the script in 1998, presented to him by Harvard graduate Jack Lemmon, who had been a member of the Harvard Delphic Club along with Matt.

A few years later Matt became one of the most sought-after actors in the world, playing major roles in successful movies. Among his most popular roles are – Jason Bourne in the Bourne Franchise (2002-16) and as swindler in the Ocean’s Trilogy (2001-07). He has also received awards for his supporting role as rugby player Francois Pienaar in Invictus (2009) and his starring role as the astronaut stranded on Mars in The Martian Man (2015) and has received Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor respectively. The actor is married to the Argentine Luciana Bozán Barroso and they have three daughters together. The couple met in April 2003 when Matt was filming Stuck on You in Miami. They became engaged in September 2005 and entered into the marriage in a private civil ceremony on December 9 of the same year at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau.

Their marriage is blessed with three daughters: Isabella Damon, born in June 2006, Gia Zavala Damon, born in August 2008, and Stella Zavala Damon, born in October 2010.
