Kyrie Irving is an Australian-born professional basketball player who, after six seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, plays as a point guard for the National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise, Boston Celtics. He was selected by the Cavaliers in the 2011 NBA Draft as the first overall choice. Irving followed in the footsteps of his father, Drederick Irving, who also played basketball in his prime. His father became his mentor and inspiration, encouraging him from his high school days until he became a basketball star.

Kyrie Irving’s Biography

Irving was born Kyrie Andrew Irving on 23 March 1992 in Melbourne, Australia. Although he was born in Melbourne, his parents were American, which meant that he did not stay in Australia for long, as his family, who were at the time of his father, Drederick Irving, his mother, Elizabeth Irving, and his older sister, Asia Irving, moved back to the United States from the suburbs of Kew in Melbourne when he was just two years old. Their first stay in Australia was due to the fact that his father Drederick played basketball for the Bulleen Boomers in Australia during his playing career. We will learn more about the basketball career of Irving’s fathers much later.

Not long after the family moved to the United States, Irving’s mother, Elizabeth Irving, became ill and never recovered from the illness. She died when Irving was four years old. After his mother died, his aunts played a major role in his upbringing. Since Irving was born in Australia, he has Australian citizenship and also United States citizenship, as his parents were from the United States. Kyrie Irving, therefore, has dual citizenship in both Australia and the United States of America. His ethnicity is African-American. His mother is originally from the Great Sioux Nation.

Irving watched his father play in the Adult Basketball League in New Jersey, and his love and interest in the game grew. After attending games in his fourth grade in school, he was determined to play professional basketball in the NBA. He wrote on the door of his closet that he would be selected for the NBA and added the words “I promise”, which he underlined three times. He began improving his skills at Boston University basketball camp, and when he was in the fifth grade, he received a scholarship to study at Boston University from the then coach of the college basketball team, Dennis Wolff.

Family – Mom, Dad

The family of Kyrie Irving consists of his father Drederick, his stepmother Shetellia, his older sister Asia and his younger half-sister London. His mother died when he was just four years old and he was raised mostly by his father with the help of his aunts. Dred, as his father is affectionately known, also grew up in a difficult family situation. He was raised by his single mother, who had to work two jobs to keep the family together. He also had a good basketball career, although he did not play professionally in the NBA. During his studies, he represented Boston University and graduated from BU in 1988 as the best goal scorer ever and also earned a degree in economics.

Drederick met Elizabeth Larson, the daughter of a Lutheran minister, a trained pianist (classical), and a member of the BU women’s volleyball team. They started dating and married as soon as they finished college. Dred got a job with a financial company where he worked as a credit manager until he got an offer to play basketball with the Bulleen Boomers in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) in Melbourne, Australia. The couple moved to Australia, where Dred played until his retirement. They gave birth to their two children – Asia and Kyrie Irving- in Australia before moving back to the USA in 1994 before Elizabeth died of early death after sepsis in 1996. She died at the age of 29, while Irving was four years old. Irving’s older sister, Asia, is an up-and-coming model.
