Apart from the fact that Jonathan Stewart is a professional footballer, he has another field of interest, namely music. As a freshman, he ran 1,279 yards with 95 carries, an average of 13.5 yards, and scored fifteen touchdowns. In his sophomore year, he ran 1,609 yards on 153 carries with fourteen touchdowns, although he missed almost half of the season due to an ankle injury.

In 2003, as a junior, he stormed 2,566 yards on 285 carries with forty-five touchdowns, and in his last season, he stormed 2,301 yards with an average of 11.2 yards per carrying and scored thirty-two touchdowns.

Stewart was named to the Parade High School All-American Team and the USA Today All-American Team this season and also won the Washington Gatorade Player of the Year award. He received offers from several schools including Ohio State, USC, California, Nebraska, Notre Dame, and many others, but chose to play for Oregon.

Although he missed two games in his first season due to an ankle injury he sustained during a game against Montana, Jonathan Stewart still finished the season with a total of 9 touchdowns, including 6 rushes, a receive, and 2 kickoff returns. His second season ended with ten rushing touchdowns and one draw.

As a junior, he recorded a career-high of 32 carries over 251 yards with 2 touchdowns and was later to be named the second-highest singles score in the history of Oregon football. Jonathan set a Sun Bowl record on the fly to win the C.M. Hendricks award for the most valuable player. By the end of the season, he had 1,722 rushing yards, 11 rushing touchdowns, 22 receptions, 2 reception touchdowns, and 145 reception yards.

He was selected by the Carolina Panthers as the 13th overall candidate in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft. His first contract with the franchise company was valued at $14 million with a maximum of $20 million and a guarantee of $10.795 million. Stewart ended his rookie season and broke the Panthers rookie record with 10 fast touchdowns, 836 fast yards on 184 carries, and an average of 4.5 fast touchdowns.

In the 2009 season, he was named FedEx Ground Player of the Week after scoring 206 rushing yards in the final game against the New York Giants that ended in a 41-9 win.

Jonathan Stewart would sign another five-year contract extension with the Panthers in 2012. The contract was valued at $37.811 million, with $23 million guaranteed, and was valid until March 2017, when he signed a one-year extension. In week 14 of this season, he ran 103 yards and 3 touchdowns, including a 60-yard run that made him NFC Offensive Player of the Week.
