Raised by adoptive parents Gilbert had always had an interest in acting since his childhood. He attended and graduated from Hamilton College where he got his BA degree. He later attended and graduated from the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College, where he earned an MBA in Finance.
Jonathan Gilbert had his first television appearance at the tender age of 7 in the American drama series Little House on the Prairie. He played the character of Willie Oleson and remained in the series until 1983, nine years after his first appearance. During these nine years, he was followed by fame and fortune as his fan base among the audience grew.
He also starred in Little House Years in 1979, the same year he appeared in The Miracle Worker, an American biographical television movie.

Much later, in 1983, he also appeared in Little House: Looking Back to Yesterday, an American television show based on the book series Little House on the Prairie, in which he also played the character of Willie Oleson. Melissa Gilbert – Jonathan’s adopted sister – wrote an autobiography, Prairie Tale, in which she revealed that Paul had taken his own life because of his constant pain.
Barbara later married Harold Abeles, and they had a daughter, Sara Abeles. Sara later took the surname Gilbert, although she was born a year and two weeks before his death and has no blood ties to Paul Gilbert.
Melissa also revealed in her autobiography that Jonathan moved away from California in his early 20s and the adopted siblings have had no relationship or contact with him since that time.
