Milner was born James Philip Milner on 4 January 1986 in Wortley, Leeds, where he was brought up by his parents; mother Lesley, who worked as an estate agent, and father Peter, who was a surveyor.
As he grew up, Milner was an outstanding student who excelled in both his studies and sports, playing cricket and football and taking part in long-distance races. He attended Westbrook Lane Primary School, before later attending Horsforth School, where he graduated with 11 GCSEs and an award for Physical Education for his outstanding performance. During this time Milner already had the opportunity to join the Academy of Leeds United, the club in his hometown where his parents were season ticket holders.
