James Charles Dickinson was born on 23 May 1999 in Bethlehem, New York. He has a younger brother named Ian Charles. His father even helped him convert the basement into a make-up studio.

And so he started experimenting with his friends. Like all make-up artists these days, James Charles opened an Instagram account in 2015, as well as a YouTube channel to share photos of his work or educational videos.

However, James was not willing to let all the hard work that cost him his early morning nap go to waste, so he sent an email to the photo company asking for a new shoot, and they agreed. This time James wasn’t willing to take a risk with their camera, so he brought his own ring light, which he uses for make-up photos that he sends to his Instagram.

The results were amazing this time, and James Charles took Twitter and Instagram to document the details of how the perfect photo was taken, and how to vroom it became a virus. Words like legendary, iconic, and bravery were used to describe James’ efforts. The photo even caught the attention of star actress Zendaya, who responded to the post by saying “YOU WIN”. Since Zendaya is one of the people James looks up to, his day was more than made.

As if the viral photo hadn’t already contributed enough to making James Charles known to the world, the Beauty Behemoth CoverGirl brought him in about a month later in October 2016 as her first male ambassador ever, aka CoverBoy. CoverGirl spokeswoman Katy Perry went to her Instagram to break the news to the world by publishing a photo of herself next to James in full glory.

James Charles was offered the task of being the face of CoverGirl’s new mascara line So Lashy! Next, he had his first television appearance with Ellen. Charles represented Marco Marco’s collection Six 1/2 on the catwalk at Los Angeles Fashion Week in 2017.
