Hannah New was born on 13 May 1984 in Balham, London, England. She is the last born of three children (all girls). New developed her passion for show business at the age of 4 when she persuaded her parents to let her attend a ballet school. She increased her interest in entertainment and joined the National Youth Theatre in the UK.

As she grew older, New developed an interest in the cultures of other nations of the world. As a result, she began to travel the world, touching at least 20 countries. In 2003 she spent 3 months in Bolivia where she worked as a volunteer in a children’s home. Thanks to her many travels, New fell in love with Spanish and learned the language at the University of Leeds, where she also majored in English.
At school, New performed in various stage productions in both languages. After graduating from Leeds, she moved to Spain where she mastered her use of the Spanish language.
As well as learning to speak fluent Spanish, New also learned the Meisner Technique at the Royal Central School of Speech & Drama. To finance her training, New started modeling and was directed by View Management in Madrid and Barcelona. Modeling in Spain opened the doors to an acting career for her after she was discovered by American talent manager Stacey Castro.

News’s professional acting career began in 2010 when she appeared as a guest on episodes of the TV shows El club del chiste and La Riera. Also in 2010, News was offered the opportunity to play one of the lead roles in the television series El Tiempo entre costuras. Between her television appearances, New appeared in several short films.
The big news breakthrough came in 2012 when she was offered the role of Eleanor Guthrie in the American television series Black Sails. The series had its premiere in 2014 and received rave reviews. Hannah’s other appearances on the small screen include The Strain, which premiered in 2017, and Trust.

Hannah’s character in her groundbreaking film The Black Sail was a gay character. Like many other actors who played gay scenes, fans were immediately curious about what Hannah’s real sexual orientation might be.
From her many interviews, New showed that she had nothing against gays and especially loved the way homosexuality was portrayed in the series.
In an interview with AfterEllen in 2014, she said
“I think it’s really interesting when you look at the history of sexuality and look at how lesbianism was defined and how it was legislated. I suddenly realized: “Wow, I have the opportunity to play this woman who grows and develops without these constraints, without this obligation to be part of something, to be part of a group”. She is completely on the edge of all this”.
She also added;
“Some people may think that if she doesn’t define herself, it keeps her from identifying with a particular group, but I think that being a fluid woman whose sexuality is completely her own and she has control over it and doesn’t have to answer to anyone is actually a stronger step. It is incredibly empowering. I can’t express how happy I am about it.”
From her words, you can conclude that New has no problem with homosexuality. But it is not enough to determine what her sexual orientation might look like in real life.
New tries to keep her private life as private as possible and never writes about her love life.
So far in her career, New has never been romantically involved with anyone. Not with a man, not with a woman.
