Dontari Poe was born on August 18, 1990, in Memphis, Tennessee, to black American parents – Robert Poe Sr. and his wife Sandra Poe. He is the youngest of three brothers with his two older brothers named Pierre Poe and Robert Poe Jr. He grew up in the Whitehaven district of Memphis, Tennessee, where he attended Wooddale High School. While practicing with the marching band in Wooddale, he was discovered by his school soccer coach, who later invited him to join the school soccer team.
Dontari played as a defensive tackle and had eight sacks and 63 tackles in his youth, earning him an honorable mention as a national defensive lineman. Outside of school, Poe played for Auburn, Mississippi, and Colorado. He also participated in athletic events.
