Dana spent her early years growing up in the city of Worthington, Ohio, where she completed her basic education at Worthington High School.

After graduating, Dana Tyler quickly began her career as an intern with WBNS-TV, based in Columbus, Ohio. There she worked as a reporter and news anchor for the station. After two years, she landed her first appearance as a weekend presenter and reporter on WCBS. When Dana joined the New York-based network, she was one of the first African Americans to host a news show in New York.
