She was born Lacena Rustin in Detroit, Michigan, on August 19, 1953, and graduated from Yale. She then attended Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, where she earned her MBA degree. She was a conductor for the chamber players at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Candy met her husband, Ben Carson, also from Detroit, in the 1970s when they both studied at Yale University in Connecticut. He is currently the 17th US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under the Trump Administration. Prior to this appointment, however, he was a candidate for President of the United States in the 2016 Republican primary elections.
