Bakes was born Anicka Bakes on February 26, 1965, in Allentown, Pennsylvania, but she said she preferred to be called and addressed as Annie. Anicka’s family moved frequently during her formative years, so she had trouble making friends at that time.
Annie’s difficulties in making friends at the time were also due to her rapid growth and maturity. According to her, she entered puberty at a fairly young age and was, therefore, the subject of many jokes and rumors.

Because of her early maturity and beautiful features, Annie started modeling at sixteen after an agent approached her in a shopping mall. Her parents thought it was a joke, but it turned out to be real. After the accident, Annie Bakes had to make ends meet and in order to survive, the then 21-year-old began working as a hostess in clubs in the L.A. area. There, in 1987, she met her ex-husband Dennis Rodman in a nightclub in Sacramento, fell in love with him and the two became lovers.
Soon she moved in with Dennis, who was warming up benches for the Detroit Pistons. In 1988 she had her first and only child for the ex-NBA player – a beautiful daughter named Alexis Rodman. Their relationship with Rodman was not at all smooth after his many escapades and infidelities, they separated again and again and got back together. Annie would later reveal that she kept coming back because she thought she could fight for her husband.
Despite her many difficulties, Annie took the chance and made her covenant with Dennis in 1991 in a chapel in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada. But things began to fall apart the following year when Annie claimed that Rodman had cheated on her repeatedly, and she also pointed out his abusive tendencies.
Annie Bakes also claimed that Rodman forced her to have four abortions, which hindered her future chances of having more children. She also said that she contracted an STD. After an ugly argument that flared up between them, Annie filed for divorce in 1992, which was finalized the following year.
After her restless and failed marriage, Annie turned to a therapist who encouraged her to write down her feelings at the time.
