Andre Braugher is a black American actor best known for his role in Homicide: Life on the Street, as Detective Frank Pembleton from 1993 to 1998 and again in 2000, for which he won an Emmy Award.

He was born in Chicago Illinois on July 1, 1962, the youngest of four children of a postal worker’s mother – Sally – and a father of a heavy laborer – Floyd Braugher. He attended school at St. Ignatius College Prep and later at Stanford University, where he studied theatre and graduated with a BA in 1984. Braugher then began and completed a master’s program in the drama department of the Julliard School, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts in 1988.
A year later he received his first film role as Thomas Searles in the film Glory. He played the role of a free black man who joined the black regiment of the Union Army. From this time on he was active in feature films as well as especially in television movies and series.
His role in the television series “Murder”: Life on the Street, when Detective Frank Pembleton made him the breakout star of this series, winning the Television Critics Association awards for individual achievement in drama in both 1997 and 1998 and receiving much critical acclaim.
